Progressing

As the time ticks by,
too quickly for my taste,
I have to wonder what happens when everything's over,
and why we have to age.

Like a rose growing from a bud to a flower,
for life to continue we must progress,
but what if we go backwards,
and instead of moving forward, we simply retrogress?

We certainly wouldn't be better people,
since we wouldn't be learning from our mistakes,
and with all this at hand,
what promises might we make?

We can't vow to change,
for we've been this way before,
and we can't vow to teach,
for to teach you must know more.

So maybe living the way life is meant to be lived
isn't as bad as one might imagine,
because our universe would be doomed with simple minds,
and all I could think of then is...how tragic.
